The
Velas Nautical Recreation Centre, recently built and located on the south side
of the island of São Jorge, 200 metres from the centre of the town of Velas,
offers a spectacular view of the cliffs. The beauty and challenge of this
maritime discovery is enhanced by the friendly and outgoing inhabitants of São
Jorge. General Information São Jorge, a boat-shaped island, is part of the ‘triangle’ and is only 22 miles from Horta and 30 miles from Lajes do Pico (11 to S. Roque), making for an interesting boat trip through different social customs and landscapes. The island of São Jorge attracts adventurous spirits with its steep slopes and extraordinary ravines that end in fertile fajãs, so many and so different that you can find lagoons or coffee production in them; others are authentic refuges of old settlements that are now abandoned. The ‘home’ of Francisco de Lacerda, São Jorge is a paradise for those who love hiking and surfing, and is internationally recognised for both. It is also famous for producing cheese and traditional embroidered quilts. Entry: Located on the island of São Jorge, Velas Marina is part of the Azorean ‘triangle’: 22 miles from Horta and 17 miles from Lajes do Pico. Modern and with capacity for 78 vessels, it allows those who sail these Atlantic waters to get to know this island and all its charms. |
