The island of Santa Maria, with its white sandy beaches, is home to Vila do Porto Marina. It is known for its cosiness and for having an excellent climate for sailing. Christopher Columbus recognised the island's qualities when he landed there in bygone days with his ship Santa Maria. With a capacity for 124 vessels, the Vila do Porto Marina is the ideal harbour for passing sailors. Known as ‘The Island of the Sun’ for its warm, dry location and fine sandy beaches, Santa Maria is full of southern charm. Its traditional white chimneys and houses with colourful contrasting outlines around the doors and windows are the mark of the first inhabitants, who came from the far south of Portugal. The island of Santa Maria has unique landscapes, sometimes dry with limestone and sometimes lush with vineyards. It is the oldest island in the Azores and the only one that rests on the African tectonic plate. Its handicrafts and varied sweets are famous. It is on this island that you'll find the Vila do Porto Marina, which fits in extraordinarily well with the landscape. A very cosy marina whose greatest asset is its tranquillity. If you like to relax and enjoy an excellent climate – you've found your place. After all, it was no secret in the time of Christopher Columbus: he himself landed in Santa Maria on his way back from discovering the New World, to take shelter from a storm.
